DESCRIZIONE

The EIC Scalator pilot shall complement and extend the EIC business acceleration services in support to the most mature subset of the EIC Community of funded innovators. It shall develop a new type of individualised services to address the needs of companies which have the potential to become as much as unicorns and for which the existing BAS services are not sufficient.

Specific Challenge

Only 5% of European start-ups scale-up and pursue the position of world tech leaders. Europe lags the leading countries in the extent to which European enterprises scale-up despite their best aspirations. As high growth companies are the ones largely responsible for job creation and economic benefit, this is a missed opportunity. The growth barriers are very high for truly high-risk deep tech innovators, the main target of European Innovation Council (EIC) instruments and beneficiaries. Because they have a longer time to market than digital start-ups, access to a broader pan-European and international enterprise market is a key factor to succeed.

Scope

The enhanced EIC pilot runs business acceleration services (BAS) and coaching – next to the grant – to support EIC pilot beneficiaries by fostering exchanges within the international peer community and providing access to international expertise, finance and partnerships. It is an important non-monetary element to strengthen the EIC beneficiaries’ capacities in their commercialization and market uptake.

A dedicated BAS service – the EIC Scalator pilot – should provide tailored made business support to up to 30 most promising tech companies to accelerate their growth and unlock the key to scaling successfully. Following their initial funding rounds provided by the Accelerator instrument (seed- and series A funding rounds), the EIC Scalator pilot will focus on beneficiaries which are ready for series C funding rounds. The pilot shall accelerate investments and partnerships among the most mature EIC beneficiaries and create European deep-tech success stories by connecting identified EIC beneficiaries to corporates (private or public buyers, Mergers and Acquisition, Corporate Venture Capital), investors (including National Promotional Banks and Institutions or/and Regional Banks that provide strong networks and late stage investment (equity or venture debt).

The expanded network shall accelerate their entries into international markets and/or listings on stock exchanges. The EIC Scalator pilot shall not provide direct financial support to EIC beneficiaries.

Expected impact

The selected entity or consortium should be able to generate a well-tested model for scaling services to foster substantial growth of deep-tech innovators that will increase their number and value of commercial deals, investments deals and initial public offerings (IPOs)/acquisitions. It should also support the selected EIC beneficiaries in their growth phase to become sustainable global deep-tech leaders.

Description: Actions consisting primarily of accompanying measures such as standardisation, dissemination, awareness-raising and communication, networking, coordination or support services, policy dialogues and mutual learning exercises and studies, including design studies for new infrastructure and may also include complementary activities of strategic planning, networking and coordination between programmes in different countries.
